Leadership Styles – What’s yours?

This is a slide from my effective leadership workshop that looks at the different leadership styles. There are many different leadership styles and this is an overview of some of the ones we relate to in todays corporate world.

Leadership Styles

Let’s take a quick look through them, and you can identify which one you display more of, and perhaps one you want to be more like.

Democratic:

This leader involves everyone in all the decisions to be made. Great inclusion – beware of taking too long to make decisions.

Transformational: 

These are the visionaries, the ones who impart change. We need these types for change – beware the no follow through.

Servant:

This style looks toward serving your team – what can you do to allow them to do their jobs better. Beware the lack of direction.

Charismatic :

These are the charmers, the influencers. They are the ones who can bring two teams together – beware of too much sales talk, not enough integrity.

Laissez- Faire:

A very hands of leadership style. Easy going, do as you will. Beware the lack of support for those in your team who are ambitious.

Authoritative:  

Very much a dictator style, do as I tell you – no democracy. Great for emergency situations, not a great style for the long run. Use as needed.

As you can see these leadership styles cross over one another, and you probably identified times when you switch between them all. As you should. However, we tend to display one style more than another as our intuitive style.
